Work Plan Template

Teacher: J. Sousa, Tyler Kingsland, T. Aungst. J. Furtado

School: D******** Middle School

Coach: Tyler Kingsland

Coach’s Personal Vision:

I will seek out the possible ways to make connections with every student that open up pathways to student success in music performance. In some students, the “success” will appear as overall improvement. In others, “success” will appear as the student achieving a proficient skill level on their chosen instrument. With these individual achievements students will feel more self-respect and dedication to their craft, leading to higher potential for continued success and participation in band at the secondary level.

Schoolwide Student Achievement Goals:

  • Students in band are to participate in classes every other day and comply with with the requisite Middle School band guidelines regarding day-to-day preparedness and attendance to band events (concerts, parades)

  • Students in middle school should be able to prepare music of difficulty 0.5 out of 6.0, (sixth grade) 1.5 out of 6.0, (seventh grade) 2.0 out of 6.0, (eighth grade)

Client’s Goals

SMARTE Goal 1: Eighth Grade Students will develop proficiency in 6 major keys (BFlat, Eflat, Aflat, F, C, and Db) rhythmic subdivisions down to 16th notes, and 6 time signatures (4/4, ¾, 2/4, 6/8, cut time and 5/4.) They will accomplish this by demonstrating proficiency in performing the DMS warm-up packet, arpeggio exercises, and RDATS packet.

SMARTE Goal 2: Students in the seventh grade will improve their rhythmic and melodic notation comprehension by 20% by completing the single line RDAT packet and the Technique examples from the DMS warm-up packet

Rationale: These particular grades have been particularly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and have lost much more time than the following or previous grades. These materials will help to catch students up to a point where they can play/perform grade appropriate music for evaluations held by independent performance competitive circuits.

Strategic Activities:

Teacher and Coach Together

  • Teachers and coaches collaborate to choose grade appropriate music for performances.

  • Develope skill-building warmup activities for full band performance.

  • Coaches may choose to provide supplementary materials for their specific instrument groups.

  • Meet daily to discuss progress on various materials

  • Schedule performances

  • Convey messages to parents/guardians regarding their child’s progress or lack thereof.

  • Discuss Scheduling of full band sessions with other coaches.

Teacher

  • Answer/relay messages to coaches received from parents and teachers.

  • Handle orders for new music/materials

Coach

  • Gather information about students’ personal files

    • Understand all allergy information, IEP files,

  • Analyze technique of individual players

  • Instruct students on basic maintenance of their instruments

  • Manage class time so warm-up/skill building exercises are covered and full band pieces are adequately prepared.

Indicators of Progress

  • Coach’s analysis of day-to-day changes in performance

  • Recordings of performance assignments in google classroom

Dates for Plan Review

  • 10/29/23 mid trimester review

  • 2/10/23 mid trimester review

  • 4/25/23 mid trimester review

The following plan should not be shared with the client

Coach’s Theories of action:

To meet the the team’s goals:

  • If I work to provide my section of students with strong fundamental knowledge and technique

  • If I create a positive environment for my students to grow into strong, confident musicians

  • If I find opportunities for students to showcase their skills

  • Then there will be an improvement in the quality of the band performance

To effect systems change

  • If I show some options for classroom practice that have not been explored

  • And allow time for other teachers to integrate new materials

  • Then we can create new Warm-up materials that contain a more well rounded and effective set of skill-building activities

Rationale: There might be too much redundancy in our current practice materials and the best way for all the students to advance their playing is to present them with a diversified set of etudes for practice.
